1892...

Pledge: a solemn promise or agreement to do or refrain from doing something: a pledge of aid

In 1892 Francis Bellamy, a socialist minister, wrote the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of the four hundredth anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus. The Pledge of Allegiance has been long recited in public schools across America as a daily patriotic ritual.

In 1954, Congress amended the Pledge, adding the words "under God"  and  in 2002, a federal judge declared those words an unconstitutional violation of the separation of church and state, placing the Pledge Allegiance at the forefront of a national debate.

It's amazing how "two" words, such as under God, can offend so many people.

 The Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
