Midnight Blue (1963): Jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell featuring Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Major Holley on double bass, Bill English on drums and Ray Barretto on conga. Midnight Blue is one of Burrell’s best-known works for Blue Note Records. In 2005, NPR included the album in its "Basic Jazz Library", describing it as "one of the great jazzy blues records".

The Heart That Rocks the Cradle

Cradle: the place where anything is nurtured during its early existence: Boston was the cradle of the American Revolution. To hold gently or protectively.

Proverbs 31:28

As we celebrated Mother's Day yesterday all would agree that mothers deserve more than one day of recognition and praise. For many of us mothers are a symbol of comfort and security. Mothers cradle our hopes and fears, as well as, our dreams and tears. They cradle our thoughts, emotions and needs with their hands and with their hearts.

Mothers are special.

This past Sunday at Cypress Wesleyan Church Pastor Ken continued his series entitled: "At the Movies" focusing on the role of the mother with the help of the 2009 blockbuster hit movie The Blind Side.

The Blind Side

The film is about a wealthy white family from the south that breaks across the racial divide to befriend and care for a homeless young black teenager named Michael Oher. Michael is an Ole Miss graduate that is currently the left tackle for the Baltimore Ravens.

The Tuohy's & Michael Oher

As you watch the movie you soon realize that this is more than a sports movie. The Blind Side is more about personal struggle and challenge and less about touchdowns and tackles. It is also a story about one that has nothing and those who seemingly have everything. Finally it is about the power to overcome and the courage of one to care for another beyond mere words. In the end it was mother of two who decided to become the mother of three. The mom Leigh Ann Tuohy, who was portrayed by Sandra Bullock, was the glue that held the family together.

The movie was uplifting, but the message was powerful.

Love conquers all and nothing displayed that better in the movie than Leigh Ann Tuohy; the mother.

Many mothers, like Leigh Ann, play powerful and unique roles in the lives of countless people around the globe and are the vital difference in every home that experiences safety and joy.

Mothers mean everything to us.

Mothers are the symbols of strength and sensitivity. Both of these qualities create an atmosphere of security and a place where love thrives.

Strength

The strength that a mother embodies is not about the pounds she can bench press in the gym, but about the inner confidence and assurance that she are vital to the success of their family unit.

Psalm 29:11 states; "The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace." There is nothing more attractive than a women who is strong without losing her femininity; a women that exudes peace without losing perspective and promise.

Proverbs 31:25-26 shares with us these words: She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs with no fear of the future. When she speaks her words are wise, and kindness is the rule when she gives instructions.

Mothers are important.

A husband depends on her peace; a family depends on her strength.

A mother's love is special...

Sensitivity

It was once said that a mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.

Real mothers are always sensitive to others and their surroundings.

Sensitivity is a combination of spiritual insight and discernment. A mother that is a sensitive soul is invaluable to all those she comes in contact with. Proverbs 31:10-11 states that she is worth more than precious rubies and that her husband can trust her; she will greatly enrich his life.

I can't add anything more to that statement.

Proverbs 31:17-19

As I close there are four words that I'd like you to remember when you see the word mom in the future.

Those words are Maturity, Others and Main Ingredient.

MATURITY: Mothers that display maturity emotionally, relationally, mentally, financially and spiritually are the moms that have the best chance to create an environment in the home that is peaceful and this mother has the best opportunity to raise healthy children. Maturity is the key that unlocks the door of stability and security.

OTHERS: Mothers often display humility in their everyday lives. Others are often more important than self when a mother is involved. Mothers are selfless not selfish.

MAIN INGREDIENT: Few homes are great without the presence of a great mother. The success of a home depends on her. A home without a mom is like waffles without syrup; you can still eat the waffle but it's not as sweet... you know something is missing.

Mothers provide peace...

Many of us are aware that a mother's love is not determined by DNA; it is determined by the heart. The Blind Side was a great example of a mother's love but in the end it is Christ's example of strength and sensitivity that provides us with hope and eternal salvation.

Christ was ignored but He still had the strength to see past mankind's failure and the sensitivity to realize that every man, women and child needed (and still does need) Him. By Him doing so He has provided comfort and security to all of those who would accept Him into their heart and into their lives.

John 1:10-14 states:

10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Pride & Joy
As you read those words you can feel the power of strength and sensitivity in God's word. Each one of us has the opportunity to be adopted into God's family and experience the kind of love that is humanly expressed in the form of a loving mother. A mother's love is grand but let's never forget it can't compare to the love that Jesus Christ has for us.

Like our mothers, He is pulling for us to win; to have victory while here on earth.

Thanks again moms for everything you do: we honor you, we praise you and we will always pray for you.

We cannot live without you.

We love you.
