Midnight Blue (1963): Jazz guitarist Kenny Burrell featuring Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Major Holley on double bass, Bill English on drums and Ray Barretto on conga. Midnight Blue is one of Burrell’s best-known works for Blue Note Records. In 2005, NPR included the album in its "Basic Jazz Library", describing it as "one of the great jazzy blues records".

Amazingly Talented...

Talent: a special natural ability or aptitude: a talent for singing.

Click on the Sam Tsui's "The Covers" album art and sit back and watch. His voice is amazing, the vocal arrangement is unbelievable and his talent is special. I'm speechless. Enjoy...

Ten Commandments of Human Relations...

Relationship: a connection, association, or involvement.

I came across this years ago and found the advice very interesting, and very true. I wish I would've been author of this, and more importantly, I wish I would have put all of these "commandments" into practice years ago. Remember, every relationship, not matter the size or depth is important. People are important. Enjoy.

Ten Commandments of Human Relations
By Author Unknown

1. Speak to People.
There is nothing as nice as a cheerful word of greeting.

2. Smile at People.
It takes 72 muscles to frown, but only 14 to smile!

3. Call People by Name.
The sweetest music to anyone's ear is the sound of his or her own name.

4. Be Friendly and Helpful.
If you would have friends, be friendly.

5. Be Cordial.
Speak and act as if everything you do were a real pleasure.

6. Be Genuinely Interested in People.
You can like everyone if you try.

7. Be Generous with Praise, Cautious with Criticism.
Praise will win out when it comes to gaining friends.

8. Be Considerate of the Feelings of Others.
It will be appreciated.

9. Be Thoughtful of the Opinions of Others.
People love their opinions as they do their own children, calling them ugly won't get you anything but anger.

10. Be Alert to Give Service.
What counts most in life is what we do for others!

Special Lady...

letter: a written or printed communication addressed to a person or organization and usually transmitted by mail.

As my wife and I have been decorating our new home we decided to have framed a letter my mother, Reese's grandmother, wrote to Reese the day she was born. My wife and I thought it would be a great keepsake for Reese to have the first letter ever written to her, and a tremendous reminder to her, and us, how fortunate we all are to have such a wonderful "Nana" in our lives.

My mother, Reese's grandmother, is a very special lady.

Nana & Reese (2010)

Below are the contents of that letter:

Dear Reese Olivia Christine,

Poppy and I have waited so long for your arrival. God has graced us with your precious, wonderful presence.
You are so amazing and beautiful, that button nose, rose bud lip, your sweet little fingers and toes. I have so much planned for us. Lots of fun things, like tea parties, movies, play dates and most importantly shopping. I know Aunt Meredith has a lot of shopping plans for us too. Maybe we will invite her to come along on our play dates. You have five great big brothers. I know you will have a lot of fun playing with them. Ryan & Addison I know will share their cars with you. Bryce and Austin will show you some basketball & soccer moves. And big brother Logan, well he is in college and he will show you how to double your money. He is a great swimmer; maybe he will teach you the backstroke.
Your mommy & daddy love you so much, always listen to their instructions. Mimi and Poppa, Aunt Deana, Aunt Jodi and Great Grandmother Charlton loves you so much too. You will be spending lots of fun time with them.
Gunner & Bella, they may look at you funny, but they think you are very special. You are a child of the Most High God. May God bless you and your family always.

   Love Always,
   Nana
    xoxo

The Boss...

Boss: a person who employs or superintends workers; manager.

Many of you, probably all of you, reading this piece are aware of the passing of one George Michael Steinbrenner III, owner of the New York Yankees, two days ago at the age of 80 years old.

Like many of you, I never had the privilege, or the honor, to meet one of the greatest owners in professional sports. And like many of you, my perception of "The Boss" wasn't always a good one. Words like meddlesome, mean spirited, arrogant and poor sport came to mind.

Mr. Steinbrenner liked to say, and he said it on "60 minutes", "Show me a good loser and I will show you a loser." Strong words from a strong man.

A very strong and opinionated man indeed.

I could write, inadequately I might add, for weeks about George Steinbrenner and his accomplishments and never do the man justice. With that being said, let me share just a few of his "early" accomplishments:

  • Culver Military Academy graduate.
  • Played the piano and was the halfback on the football team his senior year.
  • Received a BA from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1956
  • Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
  • Completed a post graduate study from The Ohio State University earning a master's degree in physical education.
  • Graduate assistant to the legendary coach Woody Hayes at The Ohio State University.
  • Served as assistant football coach at Northwestern and Purdue.
I could go on, but the list is simply too long. George Steinbrenner was truly a great man with a drive and tenacity that was second to none.

But the thing that really got my attention concerning the boss was how many good deeds he did behind the scenes. He simply did them out of the goodness of his heart, wanting no one to make a big deal about his tremendous acts of kindness.

Like I said, many of the "kind and generous" things Mr. Steinbrenner did was out of the spotlight. Many people simply didn't know how many lives he touched.

I know I didn't have a clue of his generosity and kindness.

It wasn't until an article that I read outlining his involvement with the most decorated Olympic figure skater, Michelle Kwan, in US history that I realized that he was a special man. Michelle was only 13 at the time that her parents received a helping hand from Mr. Steinbrenner in the tune of $10,000. They didn't have the money, he did...and with his support Michelle Kwan went on to fulfill her dream of becoming an Olympic figure skater. It would be years later before she would be an international figure skating superstar and Olympic champion, but at the age of 13 Mr. Steinbrenner stood in the gap and made a difference in a little girl's life.

Yogi, the Boss & Billy Martin.
1976 AL Champions (his 1st of many)

Standing in the gap is something Mr. Steinbrenner made a habit of doing throughout his lifetime. When Olympic swimmer, Ron Karnaugh, lost his father during the opening ceremonies of the Barcelona Olympics, it was George Steinbrenner that went to his room to notify him. He also promised him and his mother, on the spot, that he would pay, in full, for him to complete medical school that he was beginning later that fall.

He did and now Ron Karnaugh is an internist in New Jersey.

Could "The Boss" be difficult, rude and arrogant? Yes. Could he be impatient and rule with an iron fist? Yes. He also could, and did on many of occasion, meet people right were their need was without wanting any attention and or fanfare for doing so.

Few could argue that Mr. Steinbrenner was a champion on the field; few realized that the boss was also a champion, a true champion, off the field. So fate, or destiny, would have it that on the day that Major League Baseball celebrates it best and brightest, George Michael Steinbrenner III would be honored, remembered and celebrated as one of the best owners their game has ever known (he made baseball relevant when know body cared about baseball)...and one of the best owners that professional sports has ever seen.

He truly was an All-star.

Joy Killers

Joy: the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation: She felt the joy of seeing her son's success.

There are many things that can, and will, rob us of our peace and kill our joy, but worry, stress and fear seem to be present often when joy isn't. Let's take a deeper look:

  • Worry: Anxiety about "something" that will or will not occur. The irony is that the "something" usually doesn't even happen. Worry is wasted energy we never get back.
  •  Stress: Intense strain over a situation we cannot change or control. You have to release it all (the strain) or it will increase your stress. Most of the time it is better that somethings are out of our control. Think about it...how many times do we screw things up anyway, only to say afterward that we should have handled it differently... hence the phrase; "hindsight is always 20/20." Change the way you think about the situation that is producing stress; that is the one thing you can control. Also, minimize the amount of time and the number of people you communicate with concerning the issue that is causing the stress. Talking too much about your situation creates additional stress and actually causes your body to react in the same manner it did when the problem originally arose. Remember, things are never as good as they seem or as bad as they seem. Proper perspective eliminates stress.
  • Fear: Dreadful uneasiness over the presence of evil, danger and pain. Like Winston Churchill once said; "All we have to fear is fear itself." Fear paralyzes, and in most cases, it is counterproductive. But if something in your life is truly evil, dangerous or causing pain remove yourself from the situation...then, and only then, will your fear subside.

Always remember, God is at work, is in control and knows what is happening in our lives, and He will work everything out to His glory. He always has and He always will.

Finally, God will not invite Himself in. The greatest gift God has given us, other than eternal salvation via the cross, is the ability to make our own decisions...that awesome gift is called "free will". Free will is an awesome gift with awesome responsibilities. Once we make our decision for Him we release God's power in our lives, and then we can stand on His promise that "God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them." (Romans 8:28). He didn't say it would workout the way I wanted, but that it would "work together for the good"...He knows what is best for me...I don't.

Trust God and increase your joy.

Don't negotiate the truth...

Negotiate: to deal or bargain with another or others, as in the preparation of a treaty or contract or in preliminaries to a business deal.

Below is a short note I wrote in my Bible back in 2007. The entry is located between the book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.

April 8, 2007

Don't negotiate the truth or what is good or right. Use a measured approach when trying to resolve conflict so as to keep the conflict from escalating. Be firm but calm, Let your yes be yes and your no be no; not negotiating, nor being contentious. Always be firm but fair; viewing things from the other side...put yourself in the other person's shoes. Finally, remember there are times that serves everyone well when one person gives up their right to be right. Be secure and confident that you are standing on the side of truth in a matter, and with that knowledge based on the truth, there are times that it is simply better to be silent. Maturity will aid you on knowing when to speak and when to remain silent.

Mrs. Robinson...

Appreciate: to be grateful or thankful for: They appreciated his thoughtfulness.

This past Thursday I received a letter form the wife of the late Jackie Robinson, Rachel Robinson concerning the piece I wrote about her husband called "Inspiring Figure" on April 6, 2010. It was a wonderful honor to have Mrs. Robinson read my blog, not to mention receive a letter from her. Her letter has been a great encouragement to me to keep writing and a strong validation that peoples words can be of value to someone else.

Her letter was much appreciated and will be cherished for the rest of my life.

Again, it was a honor Mrs. Robinson, and thank you for your thoughtfulness and consideration.

Rachel Robinson

Below is the letter I received this past week:
